This probably was a bit much to do after a week of about 27 miles, but I also had planned on starting workouts on November 1st and not only was this a pretty short workout but being almost all uphill it should be gentle.
Ran 7.8 miles up Cadillac Mountain. First 1.1 miles I used as a warmup. Then I ran 4x3,2,1 minute pieces with 90 seconds easy rest. This got me to the flat section on top. Got to what I call the top in about 50 minutes which is OK and then back around to the Blue hill overlook in 53:38. About what I normally run it if I'm fit and going steady the whole way.
Cannot fake this run. If you are fit then you can run the easy parts at a good clip and the fast pieces pretty good. If your not fit then it's a good way to start. I suffered like a dog. I think I've run this whole thing at the pace I was doing the hard pieces and the easy pieces in between were not much faster than walking pace. I actually felt embarrassed when my former boss came walking down the mountain towards me while I was in the middle of going easy. But running isn't kind, takes months to get into shape and only a few weeks to get out of it. Still I enjoy bitching and whining about it.
The one good thing. I finished it. After the first 3,2,1 I almost bagged it and just ran to the top. I made myself do another 3,2,1. I almost bagged it again. Then I got in another set. At that point I was starting to feel better and got in the fourth set. So I was happy to get the workout in and not cut it short like I've done so often in the past few months. This run always helps me get fit so I know it's not some wasted effort.
